Report on the Commemoration event of the Life and Struggle of Comrade Yanar Mohammed in London 29.3.2026

The Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq and the organisation of the Communist Alternative in Iraq held a commemoration ceremony for the life and struggle of our dear comrade and leader, Yanar Mohammed, President and one of the founders of the Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq, and a member of the Central Committee and one of the founders of the Communist Alternative Organization in Iraq. The event took place at the Auditorium – Greenwich Borough Hall in London, UK, on the evening of Sunday, March 29, 2026.

The ceremony began with the Internationale and a minute of silence in honor of Comrade Yanar Mohammed and all those who lost their lives in the fight for women’s emancipation, freedom, and equality.

The attendees were briefed on the program and shown the materials on display, including a booklet of Comrade Yanar’s writings in Arabic and a booklet about her life and struggle in both English and Arabic.

Announcement was made for a protest gathering that has been organised in front of the Iraqi Embassy in London on April 24, 2026, and the attendees were invited to participate in order to pressure the Iraqi government, as part of a global campaign on this issue, to reveal the identities of the perpetrators of the terrorist crime of assassinating Comrade Yanar Mohammed on March 2, and all those behind this heinous crime.

The role of John Macdonald, a British Labour MP, was also commended for submitting the Early Day Motion motion to UK Parliament, signed by nine other MPs, including himself from the Labour and Green parties, condemning the assassination of Comrade Yanar and demanding that the Iraqi government identifies the criminal perpetrators as soon as possible.

The event was attended by a large number of representatives of feminist and emancipatory organizations, activists, academics, communist parties and organizations, trade unions, socialist activists, and many advocates for freedom and the causes for which Yanar fought. Speeches were delivered by several attendees, in addition to numerous written and audio messages and statements that were received and read or referenced.

The participants unanimously expressed their outrage and strong condemnation of the terrorist crime of assassinating Comrade Yenar, and their solidarity and sympathy with the widespread international protest against this crime, in defense of Comrade Yenar, her emancipatory cause, and her resolute communist struggle.

The event included a video presentation showcasing Comrade Yenar’s activities, a video montage of photos documenting different stages of her life and struggles, as well as highlighting a moving video featuring a young woman survivor of violence praising Comrade Yanar and the Organization of Women’s Freedom & it’s shelters, explaining in simple yet very powerful words how her life was transformed from being a victim to an empowered individual.
Two very moving songs were performed that were produced specifically for this occasion;
The first was by a group of feminist activists called “Protest in Harmony” from Glasgow, Scotland, which was directed by the artist & women activist Pauline Bradley.
The second song, which concluded the ceremony, was based on a poem in Kurdish by the socialist women activist and poet Chimen Qardaghi, titled “Fear of the Dark Streets,” with musical production by Ribwar Barami.
