Condolence Letter for Yanar Mohammed
To the comrades of Yanar Mohammed,
We send our deepest condolences and our unwavering solidarity following the assassination of your comrade, Yanar Mohammed, on 2 March 2026. Her killing in her own home was a profound loss, not only for all of you who worked alongside her, but for the wider movement that drew strength from her leadership and courage.
Yanar’s commitment to women’s liberation, secularism, and social justice inspired comrades far beyond Iraq. Her work with Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), her steadfast defence of women facing violence, and her determination to build structures of protection and resistance in the most dangerous conditions left a mark on movements across the world. Those of us who followed her work from afar understood the depth of her contribution because of the example you and she set together.
We know that her assassination came amid escalating threats to activists, and we recognise the immense pressures now facing OWFI and all who continue this struggle. Your response has shown extraordinary strength. The tributes from across Iraq, Kurdistan, and the diaspora demonstrate not only grief, but determination: a refusal to allow violence to silence the fight for equality and freedom.
For us in PCS, her life and your continued work are powerful reminders of the international character of feminist and socialist struggle. Your courage strengthens all of us, and we stand with you as you defend the shelters, protect activists, and carry forward the vision that Yanar gave so much to advance.
We honour her memory, and we stand in solidarity with her comrades who continue the fight she led with such clarity and conviction.
In solidarity,
David Jones
