DM: Muayad Ahmed, a well-known communist and a political figure in Iraq & Kurdistan. I would like to hear what you have to say about the current uprising in Baghdad and the rest of Iraq’

MA: Thank you and I am really pleased to see you here among us in Tahree square.

This is no longer a protest, it is an uprising and I can say it has some features of a revolution.

It has been mentioned that several milestones have been reached. Issues that have been talked about for years:

First of all, women’s liberation and participation in the political life and their role in bringing about change.

The youth of this country, the majority of whom are workers, toilers, deprived or students are frontline activists that keep the protests going. With the wide support of all sections of society they have been able to push back the authorities.  Wherever you go you can see the government in crisis and is seriously losing ground.

Sectarianism and nationalism have been buried for good.

Taking a stance against the religious figures and their political islam parties (the Sadri’s and others) is notable.

The uprising that began on the 24th October and prior to that from the 1st October have brought about some social and political changes that are impossible to reverse.

Another issue I would like to point out is that all the political parties including the Sadri’s have lost their social appeal. The religious reference ‘ Al-Marjaiia’ have been hit hard and lost its social ground.

There is widespread public condemnation of Iran’s role and its intervention in Iraq.

Even the reformist parties, can say even the Communist party have suffered a major blow as it was unable to take a stance in support of the movement, even though it has somehow managed to return to the scene now.

To sum up:

The movement is going forward and is continuing.

Despite 16 years of suffering there is huge support for the movement among the youth, the unemployed, the workers, as well as private and public sector employees.

What you can see clearly is that protecting the uprising and its achievements is in the public’s conscious. There is a firm insistence that this is an opportunity to move forward and change must happen.

In all the other cities, Basra, Diwanya, Nasrya, Amara, Kut and others the protestors are collaborating in this direction. Protect the uprising, move it forward to achieve more.
