Nearly three months after the assassination of the communist leader and symbol of the women’s emancipation struggle, Yanar Mohammed, in Baghdad on March 2nd, the Iraqi authorities have still not announced any official results of the investigation promised by former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. This is despite the gravity of the crime, its wide international dimensions, and its alarming implications for the human rights situation, particularly women’s rights, in Iraq.
In late April of this year, five months after their farcical elections, the Iraqi parliament elected the new president, Nizar Amidi, who in turn elected the new prime minister, Ali al-Zaidi. To this day, we have not heard any mention of the Yanar Mohammed case or the progress of the investigation from any of the heads of the new government or members of its cabinet. It seems the new government, like its predecessor, will continue to cover up this heinous crime that shook the hearts of millions of supporters of Yenar and her struggle around the world, who are now anxiously awaiting any information that might reveal the perpetrators and those behind them.
Clearly, this crime, which has shaken the entire globe, was of no importance in the handover arrangements between al-Sudani and al-Zaidi.
Information circulating indicates that the crime was committed in broad daylight, at 9:00 AM, when the streets of Baghdad are crowded with people, and that the perpetrators—at least two in number—were not masked and moved around freely through the streets of Baghdad on a motorcycle before and after the assassination. It is inconceivable that identifying them would be impossible!
We emphasize that the current Iraqi government, headed by the new Prime Minister and the President, bears full responsibility for pursuing this case, ensuring the continuity of the investigation, and preventing the case from being closed or neglected with changes in government.
The state’s responsibility is ongoing and includes uncovering the truth, punishing perpetrators, and providing protection for women’s rights activists and defenders of fundamental freedoms.
