Israel’s war on Iran and the region must stop

Statement issued by the Organisation of the Communist Alternative in Iraq

On Friday, 13th June at dawn, Israeli warplanes launched a series of airstrikes, targeting military sites and facilities linked to Iran’s nuclear program in various cities across the country. These raids also targeted military commanders and senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps IRGC, killing several of them, as well as several nuclear scientists and dozens of civilians, and wounding hundreds more. In retaliation, the Iranian regime forces bombed several cities and military sites inside Israel.

The exchange of missiles and air strikes on various military and civilian sites between the two regimes is ongoing, resulting in tragedies for the masses in Iran and the region, with the possibility of a regional war involving other powers becoming a real threat.

Hence, the Middle East has once again become a battleground for the criminal American-Israeli wars that have been raging since the early 1990s. And once again, people here face an uncertain and catastrophic future, indefinitely, at the hands of these two terrorist imperialist states and their current war against the authoritarian and terrorist ruling Islamic regime in Iran.

“War is the continuation of politics by other means,” this scientific vision adopted by communists and Marxists in evaluating wars with all its force applies to the current war of Israel and America against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The current war is closely linked to the bourgeois imperialist policy and strategy of the United States and Israel, and their Western imperialist allies towards the Middle East, which dates back over thirty-five years. This strategy was implemented through the war in Iraq in 1991, the 13 years of imposed economic sanctions, and the subsequent occupation of this country in 2003, which led to the establishment of a reactionary Islamist and nationalist regime there.

More directly and specifically, this current war is an extension of the policy and strategy of Israel and America to achieve Israel’s expansionist ambitions to build a “Greater Israel” and a “New Middle East Order” in line with their geopolitical interests of occupying and enslaving the people of the region.

This policy and strategy pursued by the imperialist bourgeoisie and its ruling institutions in Israel and America, which is steeped in criminality, has resulted in nothing but economic devastation, misery, and the destruction of the civil society structure in Iraq and other countries in the region. It has only resulted in the imposition of material and moral decline on these countries, and the submission of the fate of their people to the most reactionary, corrupt, and tyrannical religious, nationalist, and sectarian bourgeois forces, the forces that oppress the working class and its communist and emancipatory movements, enslave women, suppress the youth, and stifle their freedoms and aspirations for a better life.

The practical implications of this policy, which underlies the current Israeli strikes on Iran, are felt daily by the world through the genocide in Gaza and the ongoing massacres in the West Bank, through the occupation of Palestinian territories, the forced annexation of areas of Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria to Israel, and the support of various types of Islamic terrorists inside Syria and wherever their interests dictate, in addition to blocking the Palestinians’ ability to obtain their most basic political and civil rights.

The negotiations over the Iranian regime’s nuclear program and this new war are two sides of a single American and Israeli policy: forcing the Iranian regime to accept their terms. Otherwise, Iran, and not just the regime, will face a devastating war similar to what happened to Iraq and other countries.

This is the essence of Israel’s current war on Iran. The fact that the Iranian regime is authoritarian and fascist, that it oppresses the masses in the most brutal ways, pursues imperialist and expansionist policies in the region, and controls the course of political events in Iraq, does not diminish the reactionary nature and imperialist and enslaving objectives of the current Israeli and American war on Iran.

This also does not provide any justification for defending the Islamic regime in Iran in its response to Israel and America, because its war with them is also an extension of this regime’s repressive and reactionary policies at home against the masses, and its expansionist and imperialist policies abroad, i.e.; at the regional level.

The religious and ideological characterisation, whether Islamic or Jewish, of this war by either side conceals its bourgeois class essence and is an attempt to prevent the unification of the ranks of the proletariat in the region against it.

The experience of the masses in Iraq decisively refutes any claim that the current war on Iran might enable the masses in Iran to achieve a better future. The masses in Iraq have lived through the tragedies of war and the bleak scenarios that accompanied it: sectarian war and the crimes of terrorist forces on the one hand, and its political fruits, i.e.; the “political process” and the establishment of a corrupt and authoritarian Islamist and nationalist political system based on the power of militias on the other.

If any of the communists and socialists in Iran and the region believe that the current war against the regime in Iran, or even the overthrow of the bloody regime there through this means, is in the interest of the proletariat and the oppressed masses, and their revolutionary struggle to liberate themselves from the oppression of this regime and impose a retreat on the movements of political Islam, they are either delusional or deliberately serving the interests of the imperialist bourgeoisie and the local nationalist and sectarian bourgeoisie.

The mass political movement opposing the ruling regime in Iran and seeking to overthrow it is not homogeneous in terms of class and social composition, nor in terms of political orientation and objectives. For the masses of workers, toilers, the emancipatory women, and freedom- loving youth, overthrowing the regime is part of the goals of a radical social movement against capitalism and the existing Islamist regime that protects it. This revolutionary movement has no interest in an imperialist war.

Linking the overthrow of the regime to this reactionary war is the policy and strategy of bourgeois movements. This bourgeois policy cannot be combined with the revolutionary proletarian policy of overthrowing the regime, artificially and mechanically, under the guise of socialism and communism.

The bourgeoisie in Iran, with its various political and intellectual currents—Islamist nationalists, monarchists, liberal-nationalist bourgeoisie, and advocates of national federalism—seeks to achieve their reactionary interests, ambitions, and political and military goals of controlling society, controlling the prospect and future of the working class and youth in Iran, and stifle their revolutionary emancipatory movement by adhering to the goals of this imperialist war of subjugation. This requires a resolute response from the communist movement and the revolutionary proletarian movement in Iran.

We, the Organisation of the Communist Alternative in Iraq, express our sincere sympathy with the masses of workers, toilers, women, and youth in Iran as they suffer the effects of the ongoing war and its hardships and suffering, in addition to the poverty, unemployment, oppression, and deprivation of freedoms they already suffer at the hands of the authoritarian regime in Iran. We also express our sympathy with the civilian victims of this war in Iran and inside Israel.

We express our unwavering international solidarity with the labour movement, the communist movement, the women’s emancipation movement, and the revolutionary youth movement inside Iran in their struggle to free themselves from the grips of the Islamic Republic of Iran and from the control of nationalist, Islamist, and bourgeois liberal movements and parties over their prospects.

We stand united with all communists in the region, and with all communists who raise the banner of revolutionary Marxism, the communist proletariat, and the banner of the independent political, organisational, and intellectual class ranks of the working class in the course of the class struggle taking place within Iranian society and in the developments that will occur in the current situation.
